What we say

I made a big mistake

I made a big mistake

I don’t usually like to admit this kind of stuff but lately I came to the realization that I had made a pretty big mistake in term of promoting myself.

Here’s how it happen. A few years ago I started working with WordPress (a content management system) to help make it easier for people. WordPress provides an interface for my clients to go in and make simple modifications to sites that I built for them. It made it possible for my clients to make changes to their website without needing to know much about the coding behind the web pages.

While my clients got used to making their own changes using the interface provided to them to change text, add pictures and videos I became quite an expert at changing the code around to add features to the websites that I worked on using WordPress.

  • I learned how to make a website secure so that it would be harder for hackers to break in.
  • I learned how to create features like calendars, video feature box, track stats, generate report and create membership sites and so on.

I learned a lot more but I’ll spare you the details. Let’s just say that I had a lot of fun working around WordPress. I had some much fun that later on I started answering questions related to WordPress blogs online in forums, on Twitter and on other social media platforms.

This labelled me as a WordPress expert and I like it so I went with it.

WordPress is great and I’m going to let you finish but…

… WordPress is only on of the tools that I used in the last few years and this is where I failed.

I neglected talking about:

  • Joomla which I’m pretty good at;
  • Twitter;
  • Facebook;
  • so many of the other social media platforms;
  • Business card design;
  • Web design in general;
  • Search Engine Optimization;
  • Email marketing;
  • Making money online;
  • and offline marketing.

By now you probably get what I am saying. I failed to brand myself as a webmaster and branded myself as a WordPress master instead :-(

There is nothing wrong with WordPress and I will keep on using it. If fact if you contact me for a WordPress site I will be glad to give you a discount because I love using WordPress but I just want to make sure that you know that you can contact me for other services as well.

Other web experts such as me may understand the difference between a WordPress site and something else but most of my clients don’t care what I use. They just want it to work, look good and support their business needs.

Did any of you wondered what I meant when I talked about WordPress in the past? I’d be interested to know.

Ready or not…

Ready or not…

I hope you had a great and safe celebration and that you were able to spend some time with friends and family over the holidays! I know I did and it was great. I took a few days off and barely touched a computer. I also went away and I got to spend some quality time with wifey.

I got to spend some time with friends, family and most of the people that I love. I also ate like a little pig and gained a little bit of weight. I’ll have to pay for this at the gym or on the basketball court.

Today is my last day off before I get back to work so I’ll take it easy but ready or not, I’m back at work tomorrow (and believe it or not, I’m looking forward to it).

This week will pretty much be catch up week at work and at home but I’ll try my best to keep in touch. I’m looking forward to helping you succeed online this year.

I didn’t take any resolution this year, do you have any that you think I should take? I got a text message saying that I should give more gifts so I’ll try that but if you can think of anything that I can improve on, please let me know my commenting or sending me an email or a text about it. I’m totally open with that.

To help you with all that here’s what I’m proposing:

For this period only web sites will start at 300$ for a custom 5 pages web site, including stats reports for you to be able to track your success (you’ll know how many people come to your website when they do, where they come from and even how long they stay on your site).

You will also be provided with help to increase your traffic, make contacts in your field and manage your new asset to earn yourself some money online.

For no additional cost you will also have access to unlimited support by email. You can use the site to share interest, raise awareness, sale a produce or manage your business or your charity.

LOGOS

Should you need a logo to brand yourself or your business it will only cost you 75$ for a custom logo. It will look nice and professional on your business card, a flyer or any website.

The Steven Leconte Holiday Special will make it possible for everyone who wants to have a website to own one. Business card design will start at 60$ per design for a professional business card that you can proudly give out at business meetings and networking gathering.

A lot more will happen online in 2010 but business cards are the single most important tool that you will need for face to face encounters. Don’t get caught writing your information on a peace of paper, you’re a professional after all.
